Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle testing for drugs in Southeast Marin, California. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing spans nationwide, with facilities available in every city to conduct the testing. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your scalp or body is necessary. A variety of tests can be designed to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for substance detection. Increasing numbers of employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over the traditional urine analysis. These tests are ideal for companies with zero-tolerance policies, legal settings, and probation scenarios. One main advantage of hair drug tests is their extended detection window—up to 90 days—and the supervised manner in which samples are collected, which make attempts to falsify results exceedingly difficult. Despite this, urine tests remain the best option for identifying short-term drug usage within the previous five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analyses have gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encases a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers in the strands of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

An ideal 1.5-inch sample consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The testing process in a laboratory involves four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial integration of a sample into the lab system. This step ensures the sample is sealed, shipped correctly, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any additional data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for abuse substances. While a cost-effective means to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening need a secondary verification.

A presumptive positive in Screening necessitates more hair being extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging method to conduct.

A positive screening result is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter window.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is difficult to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides usage history: It offers a pattern of drug use over extended periods, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
