Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Southwest Marin, California. If a hair drug or alcohol assessment is required, count on Accredited Drug Testing for expertise in hair testing, with facilities available in cities across the nation to conduct these assessments. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests are capable of analyzing for drugs, alcohol/ETG or providing other tailored hair testing options.

Over recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle testing. Hair drug tests are preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Often adopted by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and for individuals on probation, hair follicle tests offer a longer detection period up to 90 days, collected under observation, ensuring it's nearly impossible to tamper with. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the top choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as hair grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp supplies 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of processing a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive screening results must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

For samples that test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is derived from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo a pre-confirmation wash as required. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Cheating is difficult: The complexity of cheating a hair drug test ensures very accurate results.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
