Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Stanford, California. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our company specializes in hair evaluations and provides service in cities nationwide. Most commonly, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair to be tested. Hair assessments are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing types.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted the hair follicle approach. Employers, courts, and substance misuse experts often prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine examinations. Hair follicle assessments are favored by companies, legal systems, and probation officers due to their zero-tolerance policy compliance. They are beneficial as they offer a longer drug detection timeline, generally up to 90 days, are collected under observation, and are nearly impossible to manipulate. For short-term use detection within five days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a detailed timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the expanding hair strand's fibers. A strand of hair, cut near the scalp, offers an alcohol and drug detection window of up to roughly three months. Hair is easy to collect, less likely to be tampered with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, consisting of roughly 200 strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg—the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and analyses exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg collection is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for precise measurement. Should scalp hair be unobtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. When specifying head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other varieties such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially entered into a laboratory's system. This phase includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, providing a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent from an electronic custody chain system.

Screening involves a preliminary swift evaluation for signs of drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples yielding presumptive positives in Screening must undergo a secondary validation.

Should a sample exhibit a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and prepared for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are retrieved from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), attesting to hair drug screening's complex nature.

Any confirmed positive screening outcomes are validated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing where essential before confirmation. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, falls under scrutiny based on both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair testing can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, in comparison to urine tests with shorter detection durations.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug testing is notably hard to cheat, ensuring greater accuracy in results.
  • Historical usage data: It offers insights into drug usage trends over time, as opposed to just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolites' concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly described as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
