Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Mountain View, California, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to choice for hair or alcohol assessments. Specializing in hair testing, we ensure service across all U.S. cities with centers ready to conduct your test. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is used. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be uniquely tailored to suit your needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity for its increased prevalence in recent years. Courts, employers, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for hair tests over urine. This method appeals to employers with zero-tolerance drug policies and is essential for probationers. A hair test offers an extended detection period, up to 90 days, with observed collection preventing tampering. For recent drug usage, within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drug substances. It is straightforward to gather hair samples, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale is advisable for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, the same amount of body hair can be collected. In reference to head hair, only scalp hair is considered. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's system. This process verifies that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial inspection for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage from most samples, any positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally admissible. Samples that screen positive require secondary confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that yield presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It offers insights into drug usage patterns over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors including hair color and individual hair growth rates may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the test evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Mountain View, CA, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing with its superior detection accuracy. While urine tests detect recent drug use, hair tests provide a more reliable and comprehensive assessment of one's substance history.

With hair testing, there's the benefit of a 90-day detection window, uncovering long-term drug habits that urine might miss. This reliability makes hair testing a preferred choice for zero-tolerance programs.

Extended Detection Window

In Mountain View, CA, hair follicle testing provides an extended detection window, offering insights into substance use over a 90-day period. Employers benefit by understanding an individual's long-term habits, ensuring thorough evaluations during hiring or routine checks.

Unlike other testing methods, this extended window sheds light on consistent substance use patterns, enabling companies to make well-informed hiring and employment decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Mountain View, CA, offers a tamper-resistant solution, greatly minimizing sample adulteration chances. This method provides reliable and objective results, unmatched by other testing forms.

The observed collection process ensures sample integrity, protecting against any attempt to alter results. This quality makes it indispensable for accurate and trustworthy substance detection under strict scrutiny.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
