In Sultana, California, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our expertise lies in hair analysis for drugs and alcohol, with centers available nationwide. To perform a hair test, typically, the individual should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body. Our tests can be tailored to detect specific substances including drugs and alcohol.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has become increasingly popular for drug screening. Employers, courts, and professionals in substance abuse often opt for hair tests over urine tests due to their accuracy. Employers enforcing strict drug policies, courts, and probation services benefit from hair testing's extended drug detection window of up to 90 days, ensuring against tampering. However, for recent drug use (within 5 days), urine testing remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective tool for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to around a 3-month detection span for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and verification. For EtG, additions, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It's suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent measure of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, it pertains to scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab process for determining a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This involves confirming the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for abuse drugs. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug usage on most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be accepted in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive in the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are drawn out from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficult to falsify: Falsifying a hair drug test is extremely difficult, resulting in more precise results.
  • Supplies historical data: It can reveal a drug use pattern over an extended period, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify immediate use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often described as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
