Located in Surfside, California, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require testing for alcohol or drugs, rest assured that we provide specialized hair testing with numerous centers available across the nation. Ideally, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your scalp or body for effective testing in most situations. Our hair tests can detect alcohol/ETG, drugs, or customized hair testing solutions.

Over the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for numerous employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse experts who now often choose it over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, as well as probationers and courts, favor hair testing. One major advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its extended drug detection window of up to 90 days; the samples are collected under observation, making it exceedingly difficult to tamper with. For drug screenings related to recent use within the past five days, however, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting substance use. Hair serves as a chronicling record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within its fiber structure. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over a roughly 3-month timeframe. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (around the circumference of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, optimal for testing. For EtG, additional analyses, or more than 10-panel tests, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is processed into a lab’s record-keeping system. This stage ensures the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any required data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation for substance detection. Although cost-effective for eliminating drug presence in most samples, a positive result here requires confirmation for legal validity. Any samples with a presumptive positive result during Screening require further validation.

For screened samples that show a presumptive positive result, additional hair is extracted from the sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the challenges of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is achieved through techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positive outcomes undergo a wash before confirmation if needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Chronological data: It offers insight into drug usage patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can be influenced by factors such as hair color and individual growth differences.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
