Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Tahoe Vista, California. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol screening, we excel in hair testing and provide facilities nationwide to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be tested. Hair analysis can cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity in the drug testing process. Many organizations, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug screening over conventional urine analysis. Entities with strict no-drug policies appreciate hair tests for their extended detection period of up to 90 days, secure collection method, and difficulty in tampering. However, urine testing remains superior for detecting recent drug usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is highly regarded as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the structure of the hair fiber, hair offers a more extended history of substance use. When hair is collected nearest to the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug exposure for up to a three-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample approximately 1.5 inches long and consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil's diameter) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is an optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests more comprehensive than 10 panels, or including EtG or additional analyses, it is advised to collect 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab's system. This step confirms the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a preliminary evaluation for drug substances. It's a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples; however, for a positive result to be valid in court, confirmation is necessary. Presumptive positives identified in Screening require another level of confirmation.

In the event of a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this procedure, substances are removed from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid testing), posing a challenge for hair drug screening execution.

Confirmation of positive results from Screening is performed using either GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a briefer detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's challenging to adulterate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug usage, not just the latest incidents.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally costs more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment focuses on the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
