Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Terra Linda, California. If a hair or alcohol test is required, we specialize in hair analysis and operate testing centers in all major cities throughout the United States. Typically, you will need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has increasingly included hair follicle tests. Many employers, court systems, and substance abuse specialists prefer a hair test over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are particularly favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation programs. These tests offer an extended detection period of up to 90 days, making them nearly impossible to cheat, although urine tests remain the most effective for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is recognized as an efficient approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extensive record of alcohol and drug use by trapping identifiers in the structure of the developing hair. Hair collected near the scalp can indicate drug and alcohol usage for up to three months. The collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and the samples are easy to send.

A haircut sample of approximately 1.5 inches, involving around 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil), taken close to the scalp can provide 100mg, the preferred amount for preliminary and confirming tests. For EtG, additions, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing is suggested. If no scalp hair is present, an equivalent mass of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we indicate solely scalp hair. Body hair signifies any other hair (such as facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab analysis of a drug testing sample comprises four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase where a sample is logged into the lab's system, ensuring that it was properly sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any lacking data entry from the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening, a primary evaluation for drugs, is a cost-effective means to exclude drug presence. However, to be used legally, any positive outcome from the Screening must undergo Confirmation. Any samples indicating potential positivity in Screening require additional confirmation.

In cases where Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. This phase separates drugs from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), rendering hair drug testing the most complex method.

Confirmation of positive Screening outcomes is executed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating probable positivity are cleansed before confirmation, if necessary. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization along with ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Executing a hair drug test is hard to cheat, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Presents historical insights: It shows a pattern of drug consumption over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to reveal recent use: Drugs typically appear in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug assessments are pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual growth patterns can alter the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often named "hair follicle tests", these examinations test the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
