At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Tierra Buena, California. Whether you require a hair analysis for drugs or alcohol, our specialization in hair tests is supported by a network of centers across every major city in the country. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head is needed, though body hair can also be used. These tests accommodate substances such as drugs and alcohol/ETG, with customizable options.

In recent years, hair follicle testing has increasingly become a part of the standard for drug assessments. Employers, legal systems, and addiction counselors often prefer hair analysis over traditional urine tests. These tests are especially favored by workplaces enforcing strict drug policies, legal authorities, and probation services due to their extensive detection window, often capturing drug use for up to 90 days. It involves an observed collection method that makes tampering nearly impossible, though urine tests remain more precise for identifying recent substance intake within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by locking biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to nearly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the preferred sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is recommended. We suggest weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. In terms of head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in a lab's handling of drug test results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial processing of a sample into a lab’s framework. It encompasses verifying that the sample was adequately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary swift check for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to stand in court. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample appears tentatively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the primary specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most complex methodology to perform.

Confirmation of any tentative positive screening result is accomplished via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to manipulate: It's quite challenging to deceive a hair drug assessment, thus the outcomes are more reliable.
  • Presents historical patterns: It can offer a pattern of substance use over a time span, not only revealing recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot unveil recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically pricier than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Elements such as hair color and individual growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While frequently described as "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Tierra Buena, CA, hair follicle testing provides significant advantages over traditional urine testing. Unlike urine tests that capture recent drug use, hair tests reveal substance use over a longer timeframe. This increased detection period ensures a thorough assessment of an individual’s drug history, benefitting employers who demand stringent drug policies.

Superior Accuracy: Hair testing is renowned for its precision. It's challenging to tamper with, thus providing a more dependable indicator of drug usage behaviors.

Extended Detection Window

One of the primary benefits of hair follicle testing in Tierra Buena, CA, is its extended detection window. Unlike other drug testing methods, it examines drug use history up to 90 days prior. This feature allows employers to gain a comprehensive understanding of an applicant’s or employee’s substance use patterns.

Comprehensive View: The ability to detect drugs up to three months back offers a more thorough analysis, serving as a crucial tool in making informed employment decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle drug testing in Tierra Buena, CA offers a highly tamper-resistant method of screening. This makes it exceptionally reliable as it significantly minimizes the possibility of sample adulteration or manipulation, thus providing results that are both trustworthy and tough to challenge.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
