Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Tipton, California. Should you require a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, we excel in hair analyses, with facilities across all U.S. cities prepared to conduct the tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed for a wide range of drug and alcohol/ETG evaluations.

Of late, hair follicle assessments have become a favored method in drug testing, gaining preference over standard urine tests. Various employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse experts demand hair tests, especially if there's a zero-tolerance stance on drug use. Key advantages include a detection window of up to 90 days, observation during sample collection, and an unbeatable resistance to manipulation. However, for substance use within the previous 5 days, urine tests remain unparalleled in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term biomarkers within its strands, offering insights into alcohol and drug use over time. If gathered near the scalp, hair may provide a detection timeframe of around three months for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly pencil-sized) located nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, optimal for evaluation and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond ten panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair is an alternative. References to head hair pertain to scalp hair; body hair encompasses all other types such as facial and axillary.

Process Overview

Drug test laboratory processing comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory system. This process involves confirming the sample's secure sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial preliminary evaluation for illicit substances. Although Screening offers a budget-friendly approach to discard drug presence in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal situations. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive at Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques like urine or oral fluids, highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples receive pre-confirmation washes as required. The complete lab workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation following CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection: Hair tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection range.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is particularly challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Chronological data: It presents patterns of drug use over longer periods, unlike those focusing on recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use indetectable: Drugs only become evident in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth differences may impact metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
