Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Tobin, California. If you're in need of a hair test for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing is your expert in this field, with locations ready to serve you across the country. For most cases, tests require 1.5-2 inches of head or body hair. Our hair testing can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more common in drug testing procedures. It’s now often necessary for employers, the legal system, and substance abuse professionals as an alternative to the conventional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are especially favored in zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and for probationary purposes. What makes hair tests particularly advantageous is their extended detection capacity, which can span up to 90 days. This makes the test not only hard to dodge but ensures the sample is collected under observation, though urine tests are still the go-to for detecting drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair sampling is recognized as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month window of alcohol and drug detection. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easily shipped.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for analysis. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically denotes scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result entails four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with the sample's integration into a lab system. This stage ensures the sample's seal and shipping were conducted correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid examination for abusive substances. Though Screening is a cost-efficient approach for ruling out drug use in most samples, a court-admissible positive reading requires confirmation. Any Screening-identified presumptively positive samples mandate a secondary confirmation.

For presumptive positives in the Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. This phase involves obtaining drugs from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a notably complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation per CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have a more limited period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug assessment is challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can outline a pattern of drug consumption over time, versus only indicating recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot pinpoint recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments usually incur higher costs relative to other testing methods.
  • Inconsistencies in findings: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often dubbed "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
