Offering thorough hair follicle drug screening in Trimmer, California, Accredited Drug Testing covers your needs for hair tests for drugs or alcohol. Our specialty lies in hair analysis, available all across the nation. Generally, strands between 1.5 to 2 inches from your head or body suffice for testing. Hair can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored test choices.

In the past few years, the preference for hair follicle screenings over urine tests has risen. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse counselors now insist on hair tests. These tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, legal proceedings, and probation conditions. Hair tests offer a longer detection window of up to 90 days, are supervised during collection, and are tough to deceive. Yet, for drugs used in the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can reveal an extended history of alcohol and drugs by locking in biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, moderately challenging to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) from nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be procured. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step wherein a sample is processed into a laboratory’s framework. This entails confirming the sample was adequately sealed and shipped, designating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any extra data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening provides a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples yielding a presumptively positive Screening result demand secondary validation.

In cases of a presumptively positive result during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive Screening result is confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty in fraudulent activity: Cheating a hair drug test is notably hard, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to register in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing options.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the actual test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Trimmer, CA, hair follicle tests emerge as the superior choice over urine tests due to their extended detection period. While urine tests can identify recent drug use, hair tests offer a broader assessment of substance use over months, demonstrating unmistakable detection accuracy.

This breadth in detection makes hair tests the preferred method for employers enforcing strict drug policies, surpassing the traditional urine tests with their enhanced reliability and accuracy in identifying prolonged drug use backgrounds.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Trimmer, CA, offers substantial advantages in identifying substance use history, extending up to 90 days. This extended detection window allows for a comprehensive review of an individual's drug consumption habits, providing employers insights beyond immediate usage patterns.

This long-term view empowers companies to make informed decisions concerning prospective hires or current employees, ensuring a consistently drug-free workplace and adherence to company standards.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Trimmer, CA, hair follicle tests stand out for their substantial resistance to tampering, ensuring results remain authentic and unquestionable. This testing process reduces the likelihood of sample manipulation, unlike other testing methods susceptible to adulteration.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
