Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Twentynine Palms, California. Specializing in hair evaluations, we provide services for drug or alcohol testing with centers throughout the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair testing is available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized purposes.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for identifying drug use. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals choose hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those overseeing probation. The main advantage is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, under observed conditions, making it hard to manipulate. However, for recent usage within five days, urine tests are more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a chronicled record of alcohol and drug usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When collected adjacent to the scalp, it offers a detection span of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is rather challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch cut of about 200 hair strands (similar to the girth of a #2 pencil) adjoining the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair cannot be acquired, an equivalent quantity of body hair is an appropriate substitute. When addressing head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. The term body hair encompasses facial hair, axillary hair, and other types.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test outcomes involves four critical steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial sample handling within a lab’s framework. This process encompasses verifying the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any residual data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation for the presence of drugs. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage for most samples, any positive findings must be validated to be legally admissible. Samples that present presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a specimen shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, substances are drawn from the hair at notably lower concentrations compared to alternate methodologies, such as urine or oral fluid testing, establishing hair drug analysis as the most complex methodology to execute.

Authentication of any positive Screening result is pursued via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. The full laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the dual criteria of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests trace drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection phase.
  • High resistance to tampering: The complexity of cheating a hair drug test ensures greater accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can delineate drug use patterns over time rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to trace recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis tends to incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair strands.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
