Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance testing in University of California Davis, California. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair analysis is supported by testing facilities located throughout the nation, fully capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body are required. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored for other analyses.

In recent years, the prevalence of hair follicle tests for drug screening has surged. Employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists increasingly opt for hair analysis over traditional urine tests. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and parole officers employ hair tests. The chief advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended detection period, lasting up to 90 days, and collected under observation to minimize tampering. Yet, for short-term detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering an extended history of substance use. When taken near the scalp, hair samples can yield a detection period of roughly 3 months for various substances. It's straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for testing and validation. For EtG, extra tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing. In cases where scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent batch of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" denotes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in lab processing for a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This step verifies if the sample was sealed and transported properly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary, expedited check for drug presence. Though cost-effective for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive screen demands confirmation for court acceptability. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening involves GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to necessary confirmation. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter periods.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Tampering with hair drug tests is highly challenging, enhancing reliability.
  • Historical insights: It traces long-term drug use patterns, beyond mere recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Higher expenses: Hair drug testing typically costs more than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates may impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often named "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In University of California Davis, CA, the superiority of hair follicle testing over urine tests is clear. Hair tests have a longer detection window, capturing drug use history extensively over months rather than days, eliminating the shortcoming of brief detection periods associated with urine samples.

Hair testing's precision gives it a considerable advantage. It provides a more accurate representation of an individual's substance use over time, which is why many organizations now favor it over the traditional urine test methods.

Extended Detection Window

With an extended detection window, hair follicle testing captures substance use over a scope of up to 90 days, far surpassing other testing methods. In University of California Davis, CA, this yields a thorough insight into an employee or applicant's drug history, aiding employers in making informed decisions.

The broader detection range not only reinforces workplace safety but also ensures that employers are apprised of substance use patterns well beyond mere temporary consumption, enhancing evaluative accuracy in recruitment processes.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In University of California Davis, CA, hair follicle tests are renowned for their tamper-resistant nature, effectively minimizing risks of sample adulteration. Unlike urine tests, hair samples are difficult to manipulate, providing reliable and unquestionable results.

This precision in security makes hair testing a preferred choice for employers, ensuring authenticity and dependability in drug testing protocols, thereby maintaining workplace integrity without compromised results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
