Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Upper Lake, California. Our expertise in hair drug and alcohol tests spans nationwide, with centers available in various cities for hair screening. Typically, a sample from the crown of the head, or an alternative body location if necessary, is required. Hair analyses can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing options.

Lately, there has been a trend in implementing hair follicle drug testing more frequently. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors mandate hair tests rather than conventional urine analyses. With zero-tolerance policies, the longer detection period of hair tests, up to 90 days, makes them formidable and difficult to manipulate. For drug use assessed within the last five days, a urine test is still considered more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers, hair provides an extensive historical record of substance use. A sample taken near the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol use within roughly a 3-month period. The process for collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and facilitates convenient shipping.

A hair segment measuring 1.5 inches containing roughly 200 strands (around the width of a #2 pencil) and near the scalp produces 100mg, which is optimal for initial screening and follow-up confirmation. When conducting EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity from body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The four crucial stages in processing a lab drug test result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample initially enters the laboratory’s system. This step ensures proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry that lacks an electronic chain of custody connection.

Screening serves as a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. Although cost-effective for eliminating drug presence in most samples, a positive Screening result requires subsequent confirmation for legal validity. Any samples with presumptive positives from Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Upon detecting a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is drawn from the original sample for the Extraction stage. Here, the drug content is extracted from hair in significantly lower concentrations compared to methodologies like urine or oral fluid analysis. This aspect contributes to hair drug testing being the most challenging technique to execute.

The Confirmation phase for positive Screening outcomes is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS processes. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process is reviewed following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the standards set by ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug testing can identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter timeframe of urine testing.
  • Resistance to manipulation: A hair drug test is notably resistant to tampering, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage pattern: It provides insight into long-term drug usage patterns, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: The cost of hair drug testing is often higher than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Drug metabolite levels in hair can be influenced by factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests," the test evaluates the hair strand itself, and not the underlying hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
