Located in Valley Center, California, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug tests. If you require a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our specialty ensures you the utmost reliability with nationwide centers ready to assist. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is utilized. Analyzing for drugs and alcohol/ETG, we provide tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a favored method for detecting substances. Many employers, court systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer these over conventional urine tests. Hair tests are trusted by those with strict drug-free policies, including employers and probationary individuals. This method's primary strength is its extended 90-day detection window, coupled with a supervised collection process making it nearly tamper-proof. Nonetheless, for drug use within a 5-day window, urine tests are still the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying substance use. The hair can document long-term usage of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair offers a detection span of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional requests, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equal volume of body hair can be collected. The term head hair refers only to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types such as facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results includes four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step involves verification that the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry which an electronic chain of custody system has not provided.

Screening is a preliminary and quick evaluation for substance abuse. It offers a cost-effective method for eliminating drug use in most cases; however, a positive result in screening must be confirmed to be valid in legal settings. Samples that test positive initially in Screening demand a secondary confirmation.

For samples that test positive initially during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for the Extraction process. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than in other forms (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All initial positive samples undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection timeline: Hair drug tests can identify substance use over a span of up to 90 days, contrary to urine tests that offer a shorter timeline.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Hair drug testing is challenging to cheat, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical data: It furnishes a timeline of substance use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It requires approximately 5-7 days for substances to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Influences like hair color and individual hair growth differences can alter drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle, beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
