Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Valley Ranch, California. For those needing hair drug or alcohol tests, we are experts in hair analysis, offering testing facilities in every city across the nation, including hair tests at our centers. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required for testing. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other personalized testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle testing has increasingly become the preferred method for conducting drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now mandate hair testing over traditional urine exams. Hair analysis is favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, legal institutions, and those on probation. It offers an extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands hold a lengthy account of alcohol and drug usage by preserving biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When collected close to the scalp, hair allows for up to an approximate 3-month window of detectability for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processes a drug test result through four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is logged into the laboratory’s system. This step includes confirming the sample’s seal and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, but confirmatory testing is required for any positive screen to be valid in court. Samples yielding a presumptive positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

When a sample is presumed positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the main specimen for further processing in the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a particularly challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests present a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: This testing method illustrates a drug use pattern over time, rather than just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
