In Vista, California, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this area with centers across all cities in the nation ready to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the head’s crown or alternatively from the body. Hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other specific substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in the process of drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The key advantage of hair follicle testing lies in its extended detection window, which is typically up to 90 days. Due to the observed collection method, cheating is nearly impossible. Nevertheless, for drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. This method offers a comprehensive view of substance use, as hair fiber captures biomarkers during its growth cycle. Collected near the scalp, hair samples can reflect up to a 3-month window for detecting drugs and alcohol usage. The process of hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

By taking a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, a sample weighing 100mg can be obtained—ideal for analysis and verification. For tests that include EtG, additional panels beyond 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair isn't accessible, body hair could be used as an alternative. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair in this context. Body hair refers to all other hair (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

In the lab, drug test processing involves four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, where the sample is logged into the lab’s system. This step includes checking that the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any supplementary data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial, rapid evaluation for substance use. Although a cost-effective way to screen the majority of samples, any positive results here need confirmation for legal validity. Samples that test presumptively positive undergo further verification.

For samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is taken from the primary sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are obtained from hair at concentrations much lower compared to other tests like urine or oral fluid testing, which is why hair testing stands as the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive result from Screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are washed before confirmation steps. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is thoroughly evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, along with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect usage over a much shorter period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating is significantly harder with hair drug tests, rendering the results more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a pattern of usage over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs only become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other testing methodologies.
  • Variations in results: Drug metabolite concentration could vary due to factors like hair color and individual growth patterns.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself, not on the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
