Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in West Rancho Dominguez, California. If you're seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol examination, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities across all US cities capable of executing it. Normally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is needed. Hair analysis can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained traction recently, supplementing traditional testing methods. It's increasingly mandated by employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists over urine tests. Ideal for zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial environments, and probation protocols, hair tests offer a detection period of up to 90 days, involve supervised collection, and are difficult to manipulate. However, for drug use within a recent 5-day window, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged record of alcohol and substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the strand's fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a visibility period of nearly three months for alcohol and various drugs. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing roughly 200 hair strands (resembling the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp generates 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for evaluation and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to obtain 150mg of the sample. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is recommended for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a proportional amount of body hair can be gathered. The term "head hair" specifies only scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses other hair types (e.g. facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves processing a sample's entry into the laboratory’s procedure. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and transit, generates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an expedited evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient means to negate drug use in most instances, positive Screening results require confirmation to be courtroom admissible. Samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate secondary validation.

Should a sample exhibit a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is derived from the original sample for Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to alternate techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before Confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection durations.
  • Challenging to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is highly difficult, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug use over time, not solely immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Frequently termed as "hair follicle tests," the examination actually assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
