In West Sierra, California, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, we specialize in hair testing with centers available in all cities across the nation to administer these tests. A hair test requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, which can be sourced from your head or body, for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests are increasingly favored for drug testing. Various employers, courts, and substance abuse experts demand hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation clients find these tests beneficial due to their extended drug detection period, up to 90 days, and collection in supervised settings. Despite this, for drug detection within recent 5 days, urine tests remain the reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have become recognized as an effective method for detecting substance use. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug usage by embedding indicators within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a three-month detection period for substances. The collection process is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides about 100mg, which is the optimal amount for testing. For EtG, additional tests, or analyses beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair is an alternative. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The process of analyzing a drug test consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into the lab’s system. This phase involves checking the integrity of the sealed and shipped sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Although screening is an economical way to dismiss drug presence in most samples, a positive finding must be verified to be valid in legal scenarios. Samples yielding presumptive positives during Screening require further verification.

In cases of a presumptive positive result in the Screening stage, additional hair is isolated from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, substances are extracted at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing a highly complex methodology.

Any positive screening results proceed to Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation, as needed. The full laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocols and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It's exceptionally hard to circumvent a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical use: The test can illustrate a usage pattern over an extended period, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Approximately 5-7 days are needed before substances become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When contrasting hair follicle testing with traditional urine testing in West Sierra, CA, the former often emerges superior due to its enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests offer short-term drug use insights, hair testing provides a broader understanding of an individual's substance use history.

Extended Detection Window

The primary advantage of hair follicle testing in West Sierra, CA, is its extended detection window, which spans up to 90 days. This offers employers deeper insights into an employee's or candidate's past substance use, aiding in informed hiring and retention decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
