Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in West Whittier, CA. Whether you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, our expertise in hair analysis is unmatched, with facilities across the nation ready to conduct these assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp hair is needed, though body hair may be utilized. Hair testing provides insights on drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be customized to suit individual needs.

Recently, drug screening methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle evaluations. Various employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists opt for hair over urine tests. Companies enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, as well as court-mandated programs, frequently require hair analysis. Its main advantage is the ability to detect substance use for up to 90 days, collected under direct supervision, making it hard to manipulate. Yet, for detecting usage within five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have emerged as a compelling method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands, akin to the size of a #2 pencil, close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is recommended to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into a lab's system. This includes confirming that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, as well as assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) and completing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid check for the presence of drugs. Although Screening is an economical way to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court acceptance. Any specimens showing presumptive positives during Screening need a secondary validation.

If a sample shows presumptive positives in the Screening step, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening is the most challenging approach to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is incredibly hard to falsify a hair drug test, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical context: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are generally pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Disparities in outcomes: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often identified as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
