Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Westmont, California. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities in cities throughout the nation prepared to conduct these tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required, either from the head or body. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to specific needs.

Recently, the practice of drug testing has increasingly involved hair follicle analyses. More often, employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug assessments over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are implemented by employers with strict no-drug use policies, legal systems, and those on probation. The key advantage is a much longer detection period for drug use, typically up to 90 days, using a supervised collection process, making it nearly impossible to manipulate. Nonetheless, for recent drug use within a 5-day span, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive record of alcohol and other substances by encapsulating markers within the strands of hair as they grow. If taken near the scalp, hair can present a detection timeline for alcohol and drugs up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred specimen for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the hair. In cases of unavailable scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory procedure comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial laboratory system processing, which includes verifying the sample's sealed and proper shipping status, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any extra information not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an immediate preliminary test for substances. Although Screening is an economical means of excluding drug use for most samples, positive screens require confirmation to be accepted in legal proceedings. Samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples yielding a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair analysis one of the toughest techniques to master.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods verify any positive Screening results. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug screening can ascertain drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a reduced detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug screening, enhancing result reliability.
  • Provides usage history: This test can reveal a usage trend over time and not just recent drug consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings are typically pricier than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly named "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
