Accredited Drug Testing provides full-service hair follicle drug evaluations in Wheatland, California. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair assessment, with facilities available in all U.S. cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific needs.

In recent times, drug testing has increasingly involved hair follicle drug evaluations. Numerous employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair-based tests over standard urine samples. Hair evaluations are favored by zero-tolerance employers, legal adjudicators, and probation officers. A notable advantage is the extended detection range for substances, up to 90 days, amassed via an observed process, making it nearly unfeasible to tamper with. Nonetheless, for determining recent usage within five days, urine screenings remain the precise option.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a detailed history of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair samples are easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (about the girth of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both preliminary and confirmatory testing. For assessments involving EtG, additional tests, and/or above 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. The use of a jeweler's scale is suggested for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This process ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient approach to dismiss drug use for most samples, any positive screen needs to be validated for court acceptance. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected to be positive are washed before confirmation if required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the precision of the results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can show patterns of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Not capable of detecting recent consumption: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis is of the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
