Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair analysis for substance detection in Aguilar, Colorado. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in this method, providing services through our nationwide centers. Generally, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and provide tailored testing solutions.

Lately, hair follicle testing has become more prevalent for drug analyses. Employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists often prefer hair testing over the usual urine tests. Hair analysis suits entities with strict anti-drug policies, probationers, and court cases. Its major advantage is its extended detection window – up to 90 days, with monitored sample collection, making it nearly infallible. Despite this, urine tests remain most precise for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are increasingly recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged historical record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When gathered from near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection range of up to approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (equivalent to the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, optimal for evaluation and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advocate weighing the sample using a jeweler's scale. If hair from the scalp isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we exclusively refer to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test outcome in the lab involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial sample processing within a lab's framework. This process verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not facilitated by an electronic custody system.

Screening is an introductory rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Whereas Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in the bulk of samples, a positive screen must be validated for legal admissibility. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which accounts for hair drug screening being the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples with presumptive positive outcomes undergo necessary washing. The entire laboratory journey from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection timeframe: Hair drug testing identifies drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are exceptionally difficult to manipulate, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals drug usage over an extended period instead of just recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It generally requires 5-7 days before drugs can be identified in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair coloration and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the evaluation examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
