Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Arapahoe, Colorado. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, we at Accredited Drug Testing are experts in hair sampling, with facilities available nationwide to carry out hair analyses. A sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be used for tests, which are suitable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized assessments.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity as a primary method of drug screening. Many employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer these over traditional urine testing. Ideal for stringent drug policies, these tests are favored by companies, courts, and probation services. The standout feature of hair follicle testing is its extensive detection window—up to 90 days—through a monitored collection method, rendering it nearly tamper-proof. That said, for recent drug use detection within the past 5 days, urinalysis maintains higher accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now viewed as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. By capturing biomarkers within its fibers during growth, hair can offer a comprehensive history of substance use. Hair collected close to the scalp allows for up to a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other drugs. It's easy to collect, resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp provides 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advised. In cases where scalp hair is not available, an equal quantity of body hair is an alternative. "Head hair" refers strictly to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for a drug test outcome involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample's initial entry into a lab's system, which includes verifying that it was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for potential drug abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient way to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that result in a presumptive positive during Screening need secondary confirmation.

For samples showing presumptive positive results in Screening, further hair portions are extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction, where drugs are retrieved from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods conduct the Confirmation of any positive Screening outcomes. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The entire laboratory processing from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests present a shorter span.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, resulting in more reliable findings.
  • Reveals historical usage: It displays a drug use pattern over time, rather than merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent detection: Drugs require around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine analysis in Arapahoe, CO, the former emerges as superior in detecting substance use. Hair testing offers a more extended detection window, making it highly effective in identifying past drug use patterns. In contrast, urine tests often have a shorter detection period, limiting their ability to present a comprehensive assessment of substance history.

Hair testing's accuracy is a step above that of traditional urine tests, offering unparalleled reliability. This technique minimizes the chances of false negatives and is less susceptible to manipulation. It establishes itself as the preferred choice for employers and law professionals enforcing comprehensive drug policies in Arapahoe, CO.

Extended Detection Window

The most notable advantage of hair follicle testing in Arapahoe, CO is its extended detection window. This method can trace drug usage for periods as long as 90 days in the past, providing a chronological picture of an individual's substance intake. Such range coverage surpasses typical short-term detection methods like urine analysis.

Employers and policy enforcers gain a thorough view of an applicant's or employee's drug use history through hair analysis. By having access to this extensive detection capability, organizations ensure their decisions are grounded on comprehensive data, reflective of true substance habits over an extended period.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Arapahoe, CO significantly curtail the possibility of sample tampering, offering a tamper-resistant testing method. This feature is critical as it assures the integrity and reliability of results. Unlike alternatives such as urine tests, hair samples are difficult to adulterate, ensuring authenticity of the substance history reported.

Through its rigorous and secure collection process, hair analysis eliminates common manipulations that can occur in other testing procedures. Organizations and agencies in Arapahoe, CO can thus rely on its unquestionable results, enhancing confidence in their drug testing programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
