Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bowie, Colorado. If a hair or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is adept at hair testing, with facilities available nationwide, including all major cities, to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other test types.

In recent times, the preference for drug testing has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists favor hair drug testing over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are mandated by organizations with no tolerance for drug use, judicial systems, and probationers. A key advantage of hair tests is their extended detection time frame for drug use, reaching up to 90 days, through an observed collection process that is challenging to falsify. Yet, for testing usage within a 5-day period, urine tests remain the most accurate choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lengthy record of substances by confining biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and drug use. It is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the recommended amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advised. A jeweler's scale is recommended for weighing the sample. If scalp hair can't be used, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we imply scalp hair only; body hair comprises all other types (face, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial handling of a sample within the lab's system. This step ensures that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any pending data entries absent in an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening is a preliminary verification for substances. While it offers an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result from Screening requires further confirmation to be legally acceptable. Samples with a suspect positive in Screening demand an additional verification process.

If the Screening phase suggests a positive result, additional hair is used from the initial collection and made ready for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower levels than other testing methods (like urine or saliva), making hair drug analysis one of the most challenging methods.

Any positive result from Screening undergoes Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair tests are challenging to bypass, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers usage patterns: It provides an insight into drug use trends over time, not just recent occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses tend to be pricier than other testing options.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although sometimes termed "hair follicle tests", the method evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Bowie, CO offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. While urine tests provide a snapshot of recent drug usage, hair testing unveils a broader detection window. The accuracy of hair tests is superior, capturing a comprehensive view of an individual's drug use history and significantly reducing false negatives, thereby reinforcing reliability.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Bowie, CO benefit from hair follicle testing's extended detection period, which spans up to 90 days. This elongated window offers a thorough overview of an applicant or employee's substance use, aiding in more informed decision-making. The detection capability serves as a robust tool for understanding long-term substance habits.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

A significant benefit of hair follicle testing in Bowie, CO is its resistance to tampering. With this method, the risks associated with sample adulteration are drastically minimized. The collection and analysis processes ensure that the results remain trustworthy and hard to dispute, providing confidence and security to employers and judges alike.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
