Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing in Briggsdale, Colorado. Should you require a test for either drugs or alcohol, our centers, situated across numerous cities nationwide, can facilitate a hair test. You typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head, although body hair might be used. Hair testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common approach for conducting drug tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair testing over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation commonly use these tests. The main advantage is a longer drug detection window, up to 90 days, via direct observation, making it nearly unfeasible to falsify. However, urine remains accurate for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a compelling resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by preserving biomarkers in the fibers of the growing strand. When procured close to the scalp, it offers a detection span of nearly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, not easily tampered with, and effortless to transport.

A 1.5-inch snippet consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar quantity of body hair might be used. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial processing within a laboratory's system. This incorporates confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses a preliminary swift assessment for drugs of misuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be verified to be valid in court. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening do require further confirmation.

If a sample is initially found positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is removed from the initial collection and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's notably challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over the long term, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
