Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Bristol, Colorado. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing, with centers across all U.S. cities ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is used. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized options.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair testing over the conventional urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are preferred by organizations with strict anti-drug policies, legal entities, and for probationary purposes. The major advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, ensuring reliable results from a monitored collection process, and making it nearly foolproof against manipulation. That said, urine tests still lead in accurately detecting very recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained prominence as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hairs (around the dimension of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is suggested to use 150mg of the sample. We advise measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be utilized. When talking about head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory testing process for a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial intake of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step also entails confirming the appropriate sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) at random, and completing any necessary data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening offers a cost-efficient method for ruling out drug use in most samples, yet a positive screen must be authenticated for court acceptance. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, further hair is drawn from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drug extraction from hair occurs at significantly lower concentrations in comparison to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to hair drug testing being the most challenging method to execute.

Positive screening confirmations are carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples preliminarily positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests which detect within a shorter window.
  • High integrity: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical context: It provides a timeline of substance use over time, rather than solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It ordinarily takes around 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the drug metabolite levels detected in hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing is preferred in Bristol, CO, due to its superior detection accuracy over traditional urine tests. Urine tests are often limited to shorter detection periods, while hair analysis can reveal substance use over a much broader timeframe. This longer detection window gives employers a better insight into an individual's drug use history, making hair testing the superior choice for comprehensive detection.

Extended Detection Window

In Bristol, CO, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection period of up to 90 days. This comprehensive detection allows employers to gain a deeper understanding of an applicant or employee's substance history, providing a broader view not just confined to recent use but also considering past behaviors. Such a wide window improves hiring and retention decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the great advantages of hair follicle tests in Bristol, CO, is their tamper-resistant design. These tests significantly reduce the chances of sample adulteration. Since the hair sample is collected through an observed process, attempts to alter results are minimized, ensuring reliable and unquestionable outcomes, thereby maintaining the test integrity at all times.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
