Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Brookvale, Colorado. If a hair or alcohol screening is needed, our specialization in hair testing and a vast network of centers nationwide make us a preferred choice. Generally, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required for testing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified substances.

Recently, using hair follicle tests for drug screening has become increasingly popular. Courts, employers, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair tests instead of traditional urine tests. Ideal for organizations with zero-tolerance policies and individuals on probation, the key advantage is an extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days. Collected in a supervised setting, this method is exceptionally difficult to alter. However, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now acknowledged as a robust method for detecting alcohol and drug usage. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and drug presence for up to around three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimum quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable amount of body hair can be obtained. References to head hair pertain to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other hair variants (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test sample involves four critical steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the sample's preliminary integration into a lab’s system. This phase ensures the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening consists of a preliminary assessment for illicit drugs. While it is a budget-friendly approach to eliminate drug presence in most samples, a positive screening outcome must be confirmed to be valid in legal settings. Any samples preliminarily positive during Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive in Screening, more hair is retrieved from the original sample for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting hair drug screening's complexity.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS technologies. All initial positive samples are washed before confirmation if required. Both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards oversee the entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug testing identifies drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection duration.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug usage instead of solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair-based drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Observation: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outperforms traditional urine tests in Brookvale, CO by offering superior detection accuracy. While urine tests are limited to recent drug use, hair testing can reveal a more extended history, up to 90 days, giving employers a broader view of an individual's drug use consent.

The reliability of hair follicle tests stems from their ability to detect a range of substances with reduced chances for deceit. This makes hair testing a preferred option for many professionals who demand rigorous standards in drug screening.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
