In Buckingham, Colorado, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. With a specialization in this type of testing, we provide it across the nation, ensuring availability in every city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Our tests are equipped to analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the preferred method over recent years. Employers, the judiciary, and substance abuse counselors often choose hair testing over urine tests. This method is favored for its zero-tolerance enforcement, wide detection capability of up to 90 days, and resistance to tampering. That said, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent usage within a 5-day frame.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are recognized for their efficacy in tracing the use of drugs and alcohol. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands, this method offers an extended historical view of substance use. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can indicate drug or alcohol usage over the past three months. This type of sample collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch length of around 200 hair strands, comparable to a #2 pencil's diameter, provides approximately 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis. For EtG, other add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for accurate weighing of the specimen is advisable. If scalp hair is insufficient, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. The term "head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing process comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step in integrating a sample into the lab's system. It involves confirming that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary quick evaluation for drug presence. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be legally acceptable. Any samples that appear positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample show a positive result during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drug compounds are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods, such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening technically challenging.

The Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation, as necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and complies with the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: This test detects drug use for up to 90 days, significantly longer than urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical insight: It provides a longitudinal pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot trace recent usage: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to cost more than alternative methods.
  • Result variation: Elements like hair color and individual growth rate variations can impact metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Buckingham, CO

Hair follicle tests offer superior detection capabilities compared to traditional urine tests. While urine tests capture recent drug use, hair tests provide a broader detection window, ensuring that past substance use doesn't go unnoticed. This longer detection period contributes to their reliability in assessing an individual’s long-term drug use history, making them indispensable for many employers.

Furthermore, hair follicle tests present a more accurate screening process. Since hair tests are less susceptible to external factors that might dilute urine integrity, they stand as a more credible testing method. Businesses and legal entities can trust hair testing results, which are less prone to manipulation, ensuring the integrity of the evaluation process.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Buckingham, CO

One standout feature of hair follicle testing is its extensive detection period. By tracing drug use up to 90 days, it gives employers comprehensive insights into an individual's drug habits, far surpassing the capabilities of shorter-term tests. This length of detection is invaluable for assessing long-term trends rather than isolated incidents.

Such extended windows provide a detailed view of a person's behavioral patterns and choices, ensuring that decisions are made with the fullest context in mind. This foresight aids workplaces in maintaining a substance-free environment based on thorough informational backgrounds.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Buckingham, CO

Hair follicle tests are considerably more tamper-proof than many other testing options. They significantly reduce possible adulteration chances due to their methodical collection process, making the test less susceptible to external contamination or substitution.

By curbing tampering risks, these tests ensure that outcomes are both reliable and defensible, providing unquestionable proof in legal and employment contexts. The integrity of results bolsters trust in the testing process, leading to more confident decision-making by employers and legal entities.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
