In Caddoa, Colorado, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, and we’ve established testing locations across the nation equipped to administer these tests. Typically, the required hair length is 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp, although body hair can also be utilized. Hair testing encompasses assessments for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing interactions.

In recent times, the inclination toward hair follicle drug testing techniques has risen. Numerous employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests instead of the conventional urine test. Hair follicle evaluations are often mandated by employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation officers. A pivotal advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection capability, reaching up to 90 days, conducted under strict supervision, and presenting formidable resistance to manipulation. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug usage within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands offer an extended timeline of drug and alcohol usage by embedding biomarkers within the growing fibers. Collected near the scalp, hair presents an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. The collection process of hair is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A segment of 1.5 inches consisting of 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) cut closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For cases involving EtG, additional testing, or panels beyond 10, a sample weighing 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar amount of body hair can be substituted. "Head hair" denotes scalp hair strictly, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process in the lab for processing drug test results consists of four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial handling of a sample in the lab’s system. This step includes checking if the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for illegal substances. Although Screening is an economical method for excluding drug consumption in most samples, any sample with a positive result requires confirmation for legal validity. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo a second confirmation step.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair in much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug analysis is the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS tests. All samples showing presumptive positives are cleansed as needed before confirmation. The entire lab process covering Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are notably hard to deceive, thereby ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Shows usage trends: These tests can display a drug usage pattern over time, not merely recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It typically requires 5-7 days after drug intake for it to be detectible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternate drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the actual testing analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
