Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Cascade, Colorado. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair analysis and has facilities across the nation to conduct a hair test. You should have 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair available for sampling. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored the hair follicle approach. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists now opt for hair analysis over the common urine tests. This method serves organizations with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and probationers. The main advantage is a significantly extended detection period, up to 90 days, observed during collection, and nearly tamper-proof. Nevertheless, for detecting substances within 5 days, urine testing still holds higher accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained a reputation as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair provides a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately #2 pencil width) located closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, the collection of an equivalent amount of body hair is permissible. When referencing head hair, it pertains only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample within a laboratory's system. This includes ensuring the sample was securely sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick analysis for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening stage, extra hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It presents a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually more costly than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
