Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Castle Pines Village, Colorado. If you're seeking an alcohol or drug hair test, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing, with facilities across all U.S. cities adept at performing hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. These tests can detect drugs, ETG/alcohol, or be customized for additional options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly integrated hair follicle testing. More employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, parolees, and court-ordered individuals often undergo hair follicle tests. The core advantage is the extended detection window for drug usage—up to 90 days—conducted under supervision, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. Nonetheless, urine tests remain highly accurate for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands' growing fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to three months for substances. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to courier.

An optimal sample consists of a 1.5-inch portion, approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil), taken near the scalp, providing 100mg of hair for effective screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional requests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. Usage of a jeweler’s scale is suggested for measuring the specimen. If head hair is not obtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. Head hair denotes scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The fundamental stages of laboratory processing in drug testing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a specimen into a laboratory's framework. This involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening serves as an economical method to exclude drug usage in most specimens, any positive detection mandates confirmation for legal admissibility. All samples indicating presumptive positivity in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations considerably lower than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting hair drug screening's complexity.

Confirmation of positive screenings utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug assessments can detect substance use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result precision.
  • Delivers historical insight: Offers a substance use pattern over an extended period, instead of just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug assessments are pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Inconsistent outcomes: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", this examination assesses the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
