Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services across the country, including Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado. Whether you require testing for substances or alcohol, our proficiency in hair testing is supported by our numerous collection sites nationwide. A sample of hair, typically 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body, is necessary for analysis, which can reveal drug use, alcohol consumption (ETG), or be customized for other needs.

The inclination towards utilizing hair follicle drug tests has grown, with many employers, judicial entities, and addiction specialists preferring them over traditional urine screenings. Hair tests are particularly favored by organizations with stringent no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation, due to their ability to detect drugs over an extended timeframe—often up to 90 days—and the reliability of an observed collection process, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, for detecting recent drug use, within 5 days, urine tests remain the superior choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can provide an extensive history of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair's fibers. When taken near the scalp, it offers up to a roughly 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect quantity for both testing and verification. For EtG, additional screenings, and tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to gather 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, the same quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair only. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab handling of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of incorporating a sample into a lab’s database. This step checks if the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any data entry needed beyond what an electronic chain of custody provides.

Screening is a preliminary, swift assessment for drug abuse. While it is an economical way to negate drug presence in most samples, any positive result from Screening requires verification to be valid in legal contexts. Any likely positive results from Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample turns out likely positive in the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the original sample and set up for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower levels than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening highly complex.

Confirmation of any positive screening finding is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All likely positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards for accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It's extremely hard to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It presents a timeline of drug consumption over longer durations, unlike recent use cases.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs in hair become detectable approximately 5-7 days after consumption.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can vary due to factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences.

Note: Despite being termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing significantly outranks urine testing for its superior detection abilities in Cheyenne Mountain, CO. It provides a broader timeframe for discovering drug use, making it a preferred option for employers enforcing drug-free policies. While urine tests may be accurate for recent consumption, hair tests extend detection, portraying a comprehensive picture of one’s substance history.

In contrast with urine analysis, hair follicle testing boasts a remarkable detection period of up to 90 days. This attribute offers businesses an invaluable tool for effective employee screening. The enhanced reliability of hair testing minimizes the chances of false negatives, thus supporting organizational policies and thorough safety measures.

Extended Detection Window

The most prominent benefit of hair follicle drug testing in Cheyenne Mountain, CO is its extended detection window. Unlike traditional urine tests, it can reflect substance use history up to 90 days, thus furnishing employers a holistic view of an individual's habits. This timeframe allows companies to make more informed hiring and retention decisions, ensuring workplace safety and integrity.

Hair testing provides a comprehensive insight into an individual's drug use patterns, making it an advantageous choice for employers. By covering a prolonged period, it aids in identifying habitual usage instead of isolated incidents. This capability is crucial for maintaining consistent workplace policies and preventing issues before they escalate.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Cheyenne Mountain, CO, hair follicle tests offer a tamper-resistant solution compared to traditional testing methods. Their structured collection process and the robust nature of hair samples significantly reduce the risk of adulteration. Organizations find solace in the fact that the results of hair tests are both trustworthy and difficult to manipulate.

The resilience of hair samples against tampering ensures unquestionable reliability in results. This quality is essential for employers needing dependable substance abuse testing. With a reduced risk of sample alteration, businesses in Cheyenne Mountain can uphold drug-free workplace policies with increased assurance, safeguarding employee welfare and productivity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
