In South Aurora, Colorado, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise lies in hair-based testing, available at centers across all Nationwide cities. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your scalp or elsewhere can be utilized for these tests. Such analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be tailored for other hair testing requirements.

Recent trends show an increased use of the hair follicle approach in substance testing. Many firms, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair tests over the standard urine ones. Such tests are preferred by organizations enforcing strict anti-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. A key advantage is the extended detection window—often up to 90 days—that is overseen directly, making it hard to tamper with. Nonetheless, for detecting use within a 5-day window, urine tests remain the more precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now considered an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extended timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection window for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent amount of body hair might be used. When we mention head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers initial sample processing into a lab's system. This involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and sent, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening need additional confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, more hair is selected from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is among the most complex techniques to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positive results are washed before confirmation as required. The total laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, increasing the accuracy of the results.
  • Gives historical insight: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
