Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Chimney Rock, Colorado. If you require a test for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis and provides testing locations across all U.S. cities, capable of conducting a hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests are versatile, identifying drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Recently, drug screening methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair analysis over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests suit entities enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers. A primary advantage is its longer detection window, up to 90 days, with observed collection, making deception unlikely. For recent drug use, urine tests remain the accurate choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extensive timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the keratin fibers of hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and drug use for as long as a 90-day period. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for diagnostic and confirmatory purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is advisable to have 150mg of the sample. We suggest measuring the sample weight using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be sampled. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This stage verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data documentation not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for controlled substances. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be court-admissible. Any presumptively positive samples from Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, more hair is taken from the available specimen for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (ex. urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening a challenging procedure to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives receive a wash prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assays can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is very difficult, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: Offers a chronology of drug usage over time, not merely the recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug assays are typically more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
