In Cornish, Colorado, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you're seeking a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair screening is unparalleled, with centers available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly popular for drug testing in recent years. Courts, employers, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over standard urine tests due to the extended detection window, identifying drug use up to 90 days and nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests continue to offer accurate results.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a strong resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, the detection window for alcohol and drugs can extend up to about three months. Hair is easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch piece consisting of roughly 200 hairs (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is an optimal sample for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels over 10, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial sample processing into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample is appropriately sealed, shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although cost-effective, a positive Screening requires confirmation to be admissible in legal settings. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening mandate further confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), highlighting why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmed positive Screening results are processed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing has the capacity to detect drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have shorter detection ranges.
  • High integrity: The ability to manipulate a hair drug test is extremely limited, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Provides usage patterns: It can depict a history of drug use over time, unlike other methods that just detect recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate ingestion: It generally requires 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more compared to other drug screening techniques.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and growth discrepancies in individuals can impact drug metabolite levels within the hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand that is analyzed, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
