In Cowdrey, Colorado, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol test using hair follicles, our specialized services are available nationwide, with centers in every city to carry out these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include other customized options.

Over the years, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a method for substance screening. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officers. The main advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed collection process, and difficulty in tampering. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Seen as an effective means for detecting substance use, hair testing is valued for its ability to provide a comprehensive historical record of drug and alcohol usage by securing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When obtained near the scalp, a hair sample can reveal up to about a 3-month history of alcohol and drug use. Collection of hair is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or testing beyond 10 substances, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a proportional amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab process of producing a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the stage where a sample is initially processed into a laboratory system. This step includes verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift assessment for substance abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient strategy to dismiss drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive reading is required for court admissibility. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Should the Screening phase result in a presumptive positive, additional hair from the original sample is extracted for the Extraction process. During Extraction, drugs are withdrawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations in comparison to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging procedure to execute.

Confirming any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Cheating is challenging: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely tough, ensuring greater accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical perspective: This testing can highlight patterns of drug use over an extended timespan, not limited to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs generally take 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests typically incur greater expenses compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as one’s hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually targets the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in Cowdrey, CO due to its superior detection capabilities. Hair tests provide a reliable method of identifying drug use over an extended period. In contrast, urine tests have a shorter detection window and are more susceptible to tampering. Hair analysis delivers higher accuracy, making it the preferred choice for organizations enforcing strict no-drug policies.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window with hair follicle testing provides a comprehensive overview of substance use history, spanning up to 90 days. In Cowdrey, CO, this method allows employers to evaluate a candidate or employee's history thoroughly, making informed decisions based on sustained drug use rather than temporary lapses detected by shorter-span tests like urine analysis.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing is a tamper-resistant method that significantly curtails the risk of sample adulteration in Cowdrey, CO. This intricate process ensures accurate and trustworthy results. With observed collection and scientifically proven methodologies, hair testing stands as a formidable barrier against deceit, granting peace of mind through reliable evidence of substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
