Located in Crowley, Colorado, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, our testing centers are available throughout all major cities across the nation. For a reliable hair sample, we require a length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head's crown or other body hair. Our hair tests can analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to your testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as the go-to method. Various entities such as employers, the legal system, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests cater to employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, judicial obligations, and those under probation. The major advantage of hair tests lies in their longer detection window, up to 90 days, with tests conducted under supervision, making them nearly tamper-proof. However, for detecting very recent drug use, the urine test remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has been recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of substance use as biomarkers become embedded within the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows. When procured near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to obtain, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch specimen comprising approximately 200 hair strands (analogous to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides the ideal quantity of 100mg for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or screening exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen's weight is suggested. If scalp hair collection is not feasible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair pertain specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in processing a lab drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial phase of processing a specimen into the lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an expedited preliminary test for drugs of abuse. While Screening presents a cost-efficient strategy to dismiss drug use for the majority of specimens, any positive findings need confirmation to be legally upheld. Samples showing presumptive positive results during Screening require subsequent verification.

If a sample is found presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited according to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug consumption up to 90 days prior, unlike shorter detection periods of urine tests.
  • Difficulty to manipulate: The likelihood of manipulating a hair drug test is minimal, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insights: It offers an indication of drug usage trends over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs are only detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs relative to other testing modalities.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
