Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Deora, Colorado. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, our centers are nationwide, equipped to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests offer analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing needs.

Hair follicle testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug testing. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals often opt for this over traditional urine tests. Hair drug tests are favored by those enforcing zero-tolerance policies due to their extensive 90-day detection window, observed collection, and resistance to tampering. However, for recent drug use detection, within five days, urine tests are still considered reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying the consumption of alcohol and drugs. Hair acts as a historical archive for substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of roughly 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is easy, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp can yield 100mg, the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. Reference to head hair pertains specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing a drug test result consist of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial phase of incorporating a specimen into the laboratory's system. This process includes ensuring the sample was securely sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drug presence. This step is economical for excluding drug use in most specimens; however, any positive result from Screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples flagged as potentially positive in Screening necessitate further validation.

Should a sample appear positive following Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This phase concentrates on isolating drugs from hair at lower levels than other approaches (such as urine or oral fluids), contributing to the complexity of hair drug testing.

Verification of positive Screening outcomes utilizes either GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The overall process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, which surpasses the shorter detection timeframe of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Evading a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, thereby enhancing result precision.
  • Chronological usage data: It reveals patterns of substance use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Fails in identifying recent intake: Drugs become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigment and individual hair growth rates may influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests evaluate the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
