Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Divide, Colorado. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise is in hair testing, with locations in every major city nationwide to accommodate. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific testing needs.

The trend in drug testing has increasingly been toward hair follicle analysis. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now often favor hair tests over traditional urine exams. For organizations with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers, hair tests offer a significant advantage with a detection window of up to 90 days, conducted in a supervised setting, rendering cheating nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain more precise for identifying very recent use up to 5 days prior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. The fibers of the growing hair strand encapsulate biomarkers, thus offering a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs over time. When gathered near the scalp, hair can provide up to a 3-month detection window for drugs and alcohol. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair specifically imply scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four pivotal steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the primary processing of a specimen in the laboratory’s framework. This step involves validation of the sample's seal and shipment, assignment of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and the inclusion of any additional data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid examination for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient manner to eliminate drug use for most samples, any positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that initially test positive in Screening need secondary verification.

In cases where a specimen tests positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, substances are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other approaches (such as urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of performing hair drug testing.

Confirmation of positive screening results is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests for drugs can detect usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug exam is highly difficult, thereby enhancing the accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Supplies historical insight: It can reveal a trend of substance use over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for substances to be evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests for drugs are often pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite being labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
