Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing throughout Dupont, Colorado. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise in hair analysis extends nationwide, providing services in all cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. We can test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customize testing protocols to your needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for drug detection. It's increasingly chosen by employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse counselors over urine tests. Hair tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation due to a longer detection period—up to 90 days—with observations during collection to prevent tampering. Despite this, urine tests are still the preferred method for screening drug use within a recent 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term record of substances by encasing biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When clipped near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to three months. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we are referring strictly to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary steps in lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system, which includes ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data not covered by an electronic custody chain.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. Although cost-effective for eliminating drug use suspicions in most samples, a positive screening must be verified for court acceptance. Samples testing positive in Screening require a further confirmation step.

If Screening suggests a sample is positive, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at much lower levels than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is a complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo a washing process prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is managed in accordance with CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation standards and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assays provide a detection window of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenge to falsify: It is notoriously hard to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring heightened accuracy of results.
  • Historical substance use: Allows for identification of a drug use trend over a span of time rather than detecting only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Price: Hair drug assays generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing alternatives.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and growth variability can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Dupont, CO

  • Detection Accuracy
  • Longer Substance Detection Period
Compared with the traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing offers superior detection accuracy and reliability. In Dupont, CO, this method remains preferred, as its results hold up robustly under scrutiny and provide comprehensive monitoring over a wider timeframe.

  • Less Chance of Tampering
The reliability of hair follicle testing is unmatched by urine tests, making it an optimal method for employers and legal entities enforcing drug-free policies. Not only does it reduce tampering risk, but it also extends the window of substance detection, offering a clearer, longer-term insight into one's drug usage patterns.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
