Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Elbert, Colorado. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, our specialization in hair analysis ensures availability across the nation, including all cities. On the crown of your head, or optionally body hair, 1.5 to 2 inches in length, can be used. These tests help to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other personalized testing needs.

Recently, the trend in drug screening has shifted towards hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are now opting for these tests over standard urine ones. Hair follicle testing appeals to employers with zero-tolerance policies, the justice system, and probation services due to its extended drug detection period of up to 90 days. However, within a 5-day window, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive view of substance use history by encasing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can provide a detection period extending up to around three months for alcohol and other substances. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and transportation is convenient.

Collecting a 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the area nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is advisable. It’s suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, equivalent body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves these four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any required data entry not already available via an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary and efficient method to identify potential drug abuse. While it’s a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use in many samples, any positive results in Screening must be confirmed to be accepted legally. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at far lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Necessary washing of all presumptive positive samples occurs before confirmation. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and is certified to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which feature a shorter detection period.
  • High resistance to cheating: The difficulty in falsifying a hair drug test enhances result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a longer-term pattern of drug use, as opposed to only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: A timeframe of roughly 5-7 days is needed for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
