Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug exams throughout Englewood, Colorado. Whether you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in such testing with centers available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the crown or body for analysis of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Hair follicle drug assessments have become more prevalent as a testing method in recent years. Numerous employers, legal institutions, and addiction specialists now prefer hair tests over traditional urine exams. This method is favored by employers enforcing strict anti-drug policies, legal systems, and probationary requirements. Its key advantage lies in the longer detection timeframe of up to 90 days, which involves an observed collection ensuring tamper-proof results. Still, for drug use detection within the last five days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

* You must register by phone or online to receive your donor pass/registration prior to proceeding to the testing center. You must bring a valid government issued ID along with the registration/barcode number which was sent to you by email.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair holds long-term records of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is advisable. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. By "head hair," we mean scalp hair only. "Body hair" includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step verifies that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid assessment for drug presence. Though Screening is a cost-efficient approach to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require a secondary verification.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a substantially lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most intricate technique to perform.

Positive screening confirmations are performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can detect substance use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug assessment is challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Gives historical insight: It can present a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks detection of recent use: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations are typically pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth rate differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.
