Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Evergreen, Colorado. If you're in need of tests for drugs or alcohol using hair samples, we're experts in this type of testing and have numerous centers Nationwide equipped to conduct it. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body suffices for these tests. Our hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other custom options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common practice. It is now frequently favored by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are adopted by organizations enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation mandates, offering an extended detection period of up to 90 days. Although urine tests are preferable for recent drug use (within five days), hair tests are nearly impossible to circumvent, with all samples collected under supervision.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a robust method, hair testing is effective for identifying substance use. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of substance intake by locking biomarkers in its fibers as it grows. Hair, when collected adjacent to the scalp, can reveal usage of substances over a roughly 3-month period. It's easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch portion of nearly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) from the scalp provides 100mg—the optimal quantity for analysis and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, or screenings exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accuracy. In cases where scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be taken. "Head hair" exclusively means scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses every other type such as facial or underarm hair.

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab processing of drug test outcomes are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's initial entry into the lab’s system. This process confirms proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional necessary data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary, rapid examination for substance misuse. Although cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples testing positive initially in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. This stage entails isolating drugs present in hair at concentrations much lower than in methods using urine or oral fluids, rendering hair drug tests particularly challenging to administer.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a more limited timeframe.
  • Cheating deterrent: Hair drug testing is highly resistant to falsification, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Chronological data provision: It charts drug use patterns over time, instead of just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot capture immediate use: Drugs take around 5-7 days before becoming detectable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair pigmentation and individual growth differences may influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although it's frequently called a "hair follicle test," the process evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
