Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Fenders, Colorado, Accredited Drug Testing offers specialized hair testing services. Our testing facilities are available throughout the U.S., ready to conduct hair and alcohol assessments. Whether testing head or body hair, the sample ideally requires 1.5 to 2 inches. Our hair analysis covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized testing.

Utilizing hair follicle tests has become a prevalent method for drug screenings recently. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. This choice complements strict no-drug-use policies and probation requirements. Hair testing's chief benefit is its prolonged detection capacity, spanning up to 90 days, making it tamper-resistant compared to urine testing, particularly for recent drug use within five days, which still favors urine tests.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers an extensive history of substances by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal a detection window of up to approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp area is ideal, yielding 100mg of hair, suitable for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or 10-panels and above, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighting the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in the lab involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial processing of samples within the lab's system, checking if the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any leftover data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening carries out an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Though Screening offers a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is required for court admissibility. Any samples suspected to be positive in the Screening are subjected to further confirmation.

For presumptive positive results during Screening, additional hair from the sample is prepared for Extraction. This stage focuses on drug extraction from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening an intricate methodology.

Confirmation of positive results from the screening is through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation where necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a narrower detection window.
  • Hard to deceive: Deceiving a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing the result’s accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can show a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Fenders, CO, hair follicle tests offer clear advantages over urine tests. Precision and a longer detection window grant these tests an edge when thorough substance use analysis is required. Hair testing reveals drug activity up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which showcase a shorter detection span, proving their superiority for enterprise and institutional policy compliance.

Reliability is another hallmark of hair follicle testing, capturing a comprehensive drug use history. This method excels in defeating common circumvention techniques typical with urine tests, such as dilution or substitution, thereby protecting test integrity and ensuring dependable results.

Extended Detection Window

In Fenders, CO, hair follicle testing's hallmark is its extensive detection range. Covering up to 90 days, this method spots drug activity more comprehensively than other tests. Employers benefit from an accurate, deep dive into an individual’s substance usage history, allowing better-informed decisions.

This prolonged detection window grants superior insight. By examining hair samples, traces of substance use are revealed over an extended duration, unlike the brief snapshot urine tests provide. This extended detection supports workplace safety and compliance protocols more effectively.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Fenders, CO, is lauded for its resistance to tampering. Its stringent collection process minimizes the possibility of sample alteration, ensuring authenticity in results. This adaptability is a determining factor for employers requiring robust drug screening methods.

Due to the stringent nature of hair testing, attempts to alter or adulterate samples are largely unsuccessful. The structure of hair makes it incredibly challenging to affect results compared to urine tests, reinforcing trust in the process and the results provided.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
