Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fleming, Colorado. Accredited Drug Testing experts in hair testing are available nationwide; if a hair or alcohol test is required, visit any of our locations nationwide. With 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body, testing can be conducted for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly involved hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations with strict drug policies, legal systems, and probation officers benefit from the extended detection window of up to 90 days and the nearly foolproof nature of hair tests, although urine tests are ideal for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is widely recognized as an effective means for uncovering substance use. Hair strands capture biomarkers in their fibers, offering a long-term record of substance intake. Close-to-scalp samples can reveal substance use over roughly three months. Hair samples are easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing about 200 strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG additions or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's best to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, equivalent body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug tests encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, samples are initially processed into the lab’s systems. This step includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any pending data input not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most cases, positive screenings must undergo confirmation to be legally defensible. Presumptive positive samples from Screening need further verification.

When a sample tests positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are separated from hair in much lower concentrations than with other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair testing one of the more challenging procedures.

Confirmation of positive results is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples showing positive signs are cleansed pre-confirmation if required. The entire laboratory cycle from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have shorter detection periods.
  • Minimal chances of evasion: It is highly challenging to evade detection in a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Pattern analysis: It reveals patterns of drug use over time instead of merely recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly compared to other methods.
  • Result variance: Elements such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually focuses on the strand of hair, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Fleming, CO

Hair follicle testing presents a significant advantage over urine tests in detecting drug use, boasting a superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests serve well for recent drug use, they limit the scope to just a few days. Meanwhile, hair testing covers a longer timeframe, up to 90 days, offering a comprehensive and consistent assessment of an individual's substance use history.

The expanded detection window allows employers to gain clearer insights into applicants’ and employees’ behaviors. This broader scope is vital for those enforcing strict drug-free policies, providing detailed substance use patterns over time, which urine tests can't offer with the same effectiveness.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Fleming, CO

Hair follicle testing provides a significant advantage in monitoring drug use with its prolonged detection window, which can extend to 90 days. This gives employers in Fleming, CO a deeper view of an individual’s drug history, surpassing the limited timeframe of urine tests. With this extended window, companies can make informed decisions based on a comprehensive understanding of potential hires or current employees.

This extensive overview of substance use patterns ensures that companies remain informed of long-term drug behaviors, contributing to better workforce safety and reliability. Hair follicle tests not only shed light on past activities but also enable implementation of robust drug-free workplace initiatives effectively.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Fleming, CO

Hair follicle testing offers a significantly tamper-resistant method, minimizing risks of sample adulteration effectively. The integrity of the sample is maintained, reducing the likelihood of inaccurate or manipulated results. In contrast, urine tests can be more susceptible to tampering, making hair testing a preferred choice for ensuring unquestionable test outcomes.

The robust collection and analysis process of hair follicle testing contribute to its reputation for producing reliable outcomes. It provides companies and courts with the confidence that results reflect genuine substance use behaviors, ensuring actions and decisions are made on truthful grounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
