Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Garden City, Colorado. If a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis is required, our expertise in this area is unmatched, with facilities in every city across the country prepared to conduct these tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is generally needed. Hair tests are versatile and can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction as a more reliable method of analyzing drug use. Employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse specialists are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. These tests are particularly favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and for probationary monitoring due to their extensive 90-day detection span, their observed collection process, and resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain best for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for detecting substance use. Hair can capture drug and alcohol markers in the fibers, providing a long-term history. When hair is cut near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to three months for substances. It is easy to collect, less prone to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, ideal for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or 10+ panels, 150mg is suggested. It's best to measure the sample with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (like facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The four key steps in lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails initial sample processing into a lab's system, confirming proper sealing and shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial quick assessment for substance misuse. Although economically effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, positive results in Screening must be confirmed to be legal. Samples that test positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample is initially positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration than in other practices (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making it the most challenging screening method.

Positive Screening results are verified via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples may be washed before confirmation. The full lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is regulated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, versus shorter periods for urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair tests are difficult to manipulate, providing more reliable results.
  • Shows usage patterns: Offers insights into patterns of drug use over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect immediate use: Detecting drugs in hair takes around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While called "hair follicle tests", the test targets the hair strand instead of the follicle under the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Choosing hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests in Garden City, CO, offers significant advantages. Superior detection accuracy and reliability distinguish hair tests as they surpass urine tests in identifying long-term drug use. While urine tests can be more easily manipulated, hair tests provide a more consistent and foolproof method of assessing substance use over time, offering unmatched reliability.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Garden City, CO, is a game changer. Hair tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, far exceeding the capabilities of urine tests. This extensive timeframe provides employers with a thorough understanding of an employee or candidate's substance history, offering a clear insight into their habits over the past few months.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Garden City, CO, are a top choice for their tamper-resistant testing method. These tests significantly minimize the risk of sample tampering, ensuring that results remain trustworthy and untainted. The integrity of the hair test is maintained throughout the process, providing accurate and undisputable outcomes that stand up to scrutiny.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
