Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Grant, Colorado. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers in all cities nationwide capable of performing these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent option in drug testing. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair testing over typical urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers. Their key advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, collected under observation, making them almost fraud-proof. Nevertheless, for recent drug use detection (within 5 days), urine tests remain unparalleled.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluations have emerged as an effective approach for identifying consumption of drugs and alcohol. They offer an extensive timeline of drug and alcohol use, as biomarkers are embedded in the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. Acquiring samples close to the scalp can offer close to a 90-day detection range for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to manipulation, and easy for transportation.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches with around 200 strands, equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil, provides 100mg, which is ideal for evaluation and verification purposes. For EtG, additional examinations, and/or tests over 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. Use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn’t available, the same quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about the initial introduction of a sample into a lab’s system. It involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, randomizing an LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) for it, and completing any further data entries not offered by an electronic custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although it is a cost-efficient technique to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screening must be corroborated for legal admissibility. Any samples with preliminary positive results in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample shows a preliminary positive result in Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample for Preparation, where drugs are detached from hair in lesser concentrations compared to other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screenings the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes undergoes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS methods. Any preliminary positive samples go through cleansing before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug assessments identify drug use for up to three months, unlike urine tests that have shorter detection periods.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug assessment is notably hard, leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Gives historical insights: It reveals a recurring pattern of drug usage, not just current consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of revealing recent usage: Drugs become noticeable in hair around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
