In the heart of Hale, Colorado, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If a test for hair-based drug or alcohol analysis is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this domain with centers nationwide ready to conduct the test. Generally, an individual needs to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair available on the scalp or body for this procedure. Hair samples can be scrutinized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for drug screening. Many workplaces, judiciaries, and Substance Abuse experts opt for hair testing over routine urine testing. Hair drug tests are favored by those enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, including businesses, legal authorities, and probation services. The major advantage is the extended window of detection, up to 90 days, collected in an observed manner, and it's exceptionally hard to manipulate. Nevertheless, for drug usage within the most recent 5-day span, urine testing remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as a compelling method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow, hair serves as a repository for long-term substance use history. Collected near the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug use over nearly a three-month duration. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hairs (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp provides 100mg, which is the perfect sample mass for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. When scalp hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we refer only to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types of hair (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test results includes the steps of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase involving integrating a sample into the laboratory system. This step ensures the sample's secure seal and proper shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any needed data entry lacking in the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is economical for discounting drug use in most samples, a positive screening must be verified for legal admissibility. Samples suspected to be positive during Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. Extraction involves isolating drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), posing challenges unique to hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory procedure, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is evaluated according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Tracks usage history: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: About 5-7 days are needed for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other drug testing options.
  • Differences in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the procedure assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
